Isaac Hawkins, clockmaker, of Hillfarrance, Somerset (1738-1820)
I’m writing a biography of Isaac Hawkins’ son, John Isaac Hawkins (who was the inventor of the modern upright piano - among other things).
I know that a long-case clock, apparently by the older Hawkins, still existed in Somerset a few years ago. It is mentioned in the Oake Parish website under “Hillfarrance history,” though the photo of it is not on the site anymore, and there are no details about ownership.
This clock had apparently been bought by a family in Crowcombe (Somerset) and was collected from Hillfarrance to give to a bride on the morning of her wedding (according to the website). It was then passed down through a local family.
I would like to be able to see this clock if it is still around – or to know if there are any more Isaac Hawkins clocks still existing.
I’ve looked through The Clockmakers of Somerset 1650-1900 (by A. J. Moore, 1998) but can’t see any reference to Hawkins there. Can any one help with any information?
